Another reason to strenuously oppose “obamacare”

with 6 comments

From Wesley J. Smith, Special Consultant to The Center for Bioethics and Culture:

If Obamacare passes, the field [of bioethics] will grow, if anything, even more powerful. The proposed law will establish scores of bureaucracies and advisory boards. The people who will serve on these boards, testify in front of them, and otherwise exert powerful sway over our centralized medical delivery system will be bioethicists. That is too much–and too dangerous– power to be wielded by denizens in a field that generally rejects human exceptionalism and its corollary, the sanctity/equality of human life.

  2. How does he know which part? Whether there will be scores of bureaucracies and advisory boards? Whether these boards and those who testify will be bioethicists? Or whether these bioethicists will reject human exceptionalism and the sanctity of human life?

  3. Actually, before I comment further, it would be helpful if you would analyze the article a bit more. Analysis might clear up for me how he knows for sure that advisory boards will be set up. Is it written in the current plan/proposal? What terminology is used to describe these boards? Is he making inferences or does he know for sure this is the aim of the administration and their current plan. I realize what heavy-handed bioethicists will do given unfettered freedom to set policy, but how do we know FROM THE PLAN AND ITS LANGUAGE that these boards will exist and be given the freedom he suggests they will receive.

    • This much I know, Wesley Smith has significant knowledge in this field, and one doesn’t have to know the specific language of the current government proposal to know that it will contain advisory panels and boards and decision making bodies. If you really want me to do the legwork of finding out the specific language, I can do that. But I think that you and I both know the realities of any kind of system that is run by the government, plus we have the experience of other countries who have already gone down this path and they have such bodies. No reason to think ours would be different, especially considering the people who are calling the shots right now, from both political parties. These boards MUST exist for any type of government run plan to work. Further, we already know the ethical predisposition of those with whom Mr. Obama has surrounded himself, for he shares their views. Knowing of Mr. Wesley’s work and reputation, I give his opinions a lot of credence. But if you want to know specifics, these are the new boards and such being proposed (for more info on specifics from the bill, see this article: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZGU3YTI0ODliNjlkYzJmOWE2ZWU1ZjJkOWE5MDNmYjA=

“While perusing this bill online, the names of brand-new commissions, councils, and other bureaucracies virtually cascaded from my computer screen. Among them:

      — Affordable Health Benefit Gateways (one per state)

      — American Health Benefit Gateway

      — Center for Health Outcomes Research and Evaluation

      — CLASS Independence Advisory Council

      — Commission on Key National Indicators

      — Community Preventive Services Task Force

      — Coordinating Committee on Women’s Health

      — Federally Qualified Health Centers

      — Health Care Program Integrity Coordinating Council

      — Interagency Working Group on Health Care Quality

      — Medical Advisory Council

      — National Center for Health Workforce Analysis

      — National Clearinghouse for Long-Term Care Information

      — National Committee for Quality Assurance

      — National Coordinator for Health Technology

      — National Health Care Workforce Commission

      — National Health Service Corps

      — National Oral Health Surveillance System

      — National Prevention, Health Promotion and Public Health Council

      — National Women’s Health Information Center

      — Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology

      — Office of Women’s Health and Gender-Based Research

      — Office on Women’s Health

      — Patient Safety Research Center

      — Personal Care Attendants Workforce Advisory Panel

      — Prevention and Public Health Investment Fund

      — Preventive Services Task Force

      — Ready Reserve Corps

      — Shared Decision Making Resource Centers

  4. His credentials seem solid though I wasn’t concerned about that. But he doesn’t know what will happen anymore than you do. This seems to be a continued tactic to show how “death panels” will be created. I suggest that if America is going the route of bioethical panels (death panels) it is going to occur in our current health care system or the one proposed. The allowance for these problems is systemic and not only bound to a new proposal. If America will allow for it in the future under a government watched system, they will allow for it under a privatized system. Because this is the case, the main concern most people have with the new plan is that the government is involved and then becomes a political discussion. We are going to move toward bioethical problems because America is passive and unresolved to change them based on our continued sin. What will happen if we do not change our current system is also a moral concern: People will not get the Health Care they need. I would like convincing evidence that we will not have future death panels in a privatized system either. If we are capable of allowing for that kind of problem, then it will happen regardless of the type of system.
