Russell and Duenes

It’s what they simply can’t talk about

I’ve been reminded again this week why Christ’s people, the church, should abandon the public schools and continue to establish biblically faithful schools for their children. Let’s see, with my juniors this week we discussed the pros and cons of cloning and in-vitro fertilization. My guess is that the kids down at the local government schools are not having such discussions. Further, we discussed these specific topics within the framework of larger discussions about the nature of technology and how one can be discerning and wise in one’s use of it. Again, not likely something that’s happening in most public schools.

My seniors and I have been discussing abortion generally, and today we began a cursory discussion of the text of the Roe v. Wade decision from 1973. Doubtless they’re talking about this case at Arroyo High School up the road. Of course, discussion about Roe led to a more general discussion of the relative merits and drawbacks of contraception, another topic where public schools are seeking to impart wisdom and discernment among the young, one can be sure.

As I’ve contended again and again, the public schools are failing students not mainly through what they do teach, but by virtue of what they don’t and, in reality, simply can’t. And the students don’t know what they’re missing.
