No Christian Universities Here

with 4 comments

I’ve often puzzled over the fact that, to my knowledge, there are no Christian universities here in the Bay Area. There’s Bethany College in Santa Cruz, but technically that’s not the Bay Area, and Bethany only offers about fifteen majors, none of them in the hard sciences, and has an enrollment of 534 students. Simpson University used to be in San Francisco, but they moved to Redding a long time ago. I was talking about this with someone the other day and mentioning that in the Los Angeles area, where I grew up, there were major Christian universities like BIOLA and Talbot Seminary, The Master’s College and Seminary and Azusa Pacific University,  as well as smaller ones like Vanguard University, Cal Baptist University and Fuller Seminary/ U.S. Center for World Missions. Although when we thought about these, we realized that none of them were actually in the city of Los Angeles. A number of them were in more conservative Orange County.

Is it because the Bay Area (and Los Angeles) are too liberal and Christians don’t want to found universities here? Is it the cost of living relative to cheaper places like the midwest? Is Northern California a “lost cause?” I just wonder about this. The Bay Area is a major cultural, political, business and population center. Why are there no serious places of Christian higher education here?

  1. I’ve been asking the same question for years. I’m praying for a revival in the Bay Area!!! God is doing some amazing things…

  2. BTW, I’ve always thought that if God led me to pursue higher degrees I would want to be at least a small part of making a Christian institution for higher education in the Bay Area possible… I don’t see any advanced degrees in my near future, though.

    • Don’t rule anything out, Kevin. We’ll be glad to see you up here in the near future, Lord willing.

  3. Patten University exists, but your point remains. There needs to be a beacon of “Christian” higher learning in the Bay Area.
