Abstain From Fleshly Lusts

As I was pondering 1 Peter the other day, I was struck by Peter’s exhortations to us to say “no” to our lusts. So I decided to do a bit of digging into the Scriptures on the topic of our lust/ lusts. Consider the following…

Therefore, let not sin reign in your moral bodies to obey its lusts.

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful lusts; to be made new in the attitude of your minds

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Flee also youthful lusts: and pursue righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation.

Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts.

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly lusts.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.
