The Only Rational Man

leave a comment »

“I count only two men rational: the man who loves God with all his heart because he has found Him, and the man who seeks God with all his heart because he has as yet found Him not.” – Blaise Pascal

My pastor shared this quote on Sunday, and so I thought I’d pass it along to you. We are accustomed these days to think of “rational” people as those who do NOT believe in or even think about God. At least we tend to consider God as unnecessary to rational thought. Yet here we have Pascal, one of the great men of mathematics and science in human history, claiming that loving God with all one’s heart is at the center of rationality. It is the starting and ending point in all rational activity. Indeed, man is at the height of irrationality when he ignores his Creator and Sustainer. As the Scriptures say, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,” and in Christ Jesus “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” As the apostle Paul says, “From Him and through Him and to Him are all things,” including rationality.
