Impress Them Upon Your Children

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.  ~ Deut. 6:6-9

Here is one of the clearest indications that God desires an explicitly Christian education for His people. Not only are American public schools devoid of any kind of Scripture-centered education approaching that which is described above, they are happily devoid of it. Of course, many things in our modern world outside of the school classroom work against a life where children are being taught God’s Word constantly, where they might have His teachings impressed upon themselves, spoken of regularly throughout the day, and put into their minds through constant written reminder. Why should we add to this six to seven hours of the day spent in government schools where nary a peep will be made about God and His commandments?

Now, as I’ve said numerous times, but need to say again, I understand that there are many Christians who would provide their children with an explicitly Christian education, if only they could afford a private Christian school or had the wherewithal to homeschool. And my encouragement to them, as to myself, is to begin simply by taking Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (and many other verses like it) to heart, and then start doing what one can to provide a Scripture-saturated education for one’s children even while they’re in the public school, while also taking and creating whatever opportunities one can to bring about faithful Christian abandonment of America’s God-defaming, God-belittling and secularist-producing schools and faithful Christian establishment of biblical schools (whether as outside institutions or in the home).

God commands us to give our children a thoroughly Bible-saturated education because God knows that His Word “is no trifle for you, but it is your life” (Deut. 32:47).
