Punished with a Baby

“You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.” ~ Deut. 7:14

The abortion culture which largely rules our country is supported by a premise, often unspoken (though spoken by President Obama), namely, that a pregnancy is a kind punishment. A woman’s fertility is considered a liability, her body needing to be forced by medicine into a kind of barrenness (There’s never been a male birth control pill. Wonder why. For I can’t imagine that the modern, enlightened man is more wont to have babies than the women he’s sleeping with).

Yet here is God, promising that one of the great rewards for obedience is abundant fertility. Indeed, open wombs are part of what it means for Israel to be “blessed above all peoples.” Of course, this blessing of children presupposes that God’s people are obeying God’s sexual commands. Sexual fidelity to God and to each other goes hand-in-hand with the blessing of a fruitful womb. When we are intent on rebelling against God’s good purposes for sexual intercourse, everything else gets marred and twisted, including our thoughts and attitudes about bringing children into this world.
