By the Predetermined Plan and Foreknowledge of God

When God is ready to move His redemptive plans forward, He does so in His sovereign rulership over all things. We see this in Acts 2, where the text tells us: “And [the gathered believers] were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.” These believers did not know foreign languages, but suddenly they were able to speak them, so that the foreign Jews among them could understand what they were saying. God is ruling the believers tongues and speech patterns.

St. Peter also tells us that God was sovereign over the historical events leading to the death of Christ, for Jesus was “delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God.” Men and women had to act in a certain way such that Jesus would be crucified, and God saw to it that they did so.

Salvation is also a sovereign work of God. Acts 2 concludes by saying that “the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” It is God who does the adding. This should be very encouraging, in light of our times. We need not worry about relevance, or having clever messages. Our task is to testify to the truth, as Peter did, and allow the Lord to add those who are being saved. Salvation is from the Lord. His truth is what wins hearts.
